OVERVIEW
Peanut Butter Taffy is a 3-oscillator subtractive synthesizer built with the Web Audio API. It runs entirely in your browser — no install, no plugins — and works on phones, tablets, desktops, and game consoles with a browser.
GETTING STARTED
- Tap/click any white or black key on the on-screen keyboard, or press a computer key, to hear sound. The first touch/keypress also wakes up the audio engine (a browser requirement).
- Use the ◀ / ▶ arrows next to the patch name, or ← → on your keyboard, to browse the 20 factory presets.
- SAVE stores your current knob settings into a temporary slot for this session; LOAD recalls it.
MODE SWITCH — MAIN / PERFORM / FX
- MAIN — oscillator bank, mixer, filter, and loudness contour. This is where you shape the core tone.
- PERFORM — arpeggiator plus two touch/mouse XY pads for expressive real-time filter and envelope control.
- FX — chorus, analog delay, reverb, drive/saturation, phaser, and bitcrusher send/return controls.
EFFECTS RACK
- CHORUS — classic modulated-delay thickening. Rate/Depth shape the shimmer.
- ANALOG DELAY — stereo ping-pong echo with independent left/right time and feedback.
- REVERB — algorithmic space. Size and Decay shape the room, Tone darkens or brightens the tail.
- DRIVE / SATURATION — analog-style waveshaping warmth to hard clip, with a Tone knob to tame the top end.
- PHASER — 4-stage sweeping all-pass filter with resonant Feedback for a deeper whoosh.
- BITCRUSHER — lo-fi bit-depth and sample-rate reduction for glitchy, degraded textures.
- Each effect has its own POWER toggle plus an amount knob in the OUTPUT section — turn the effect on, then dial in how much of it blends into the mix.
KNOBS & CONTROLS
- Drag up/down on any knob (mouse or touch) to change its value — the yellow ring around the knob fills to show its current position.
- Double-click a knob to arm MIDI Learn — the next MIDI CC message received will be mapped to that knob.
- Waveform buttons under each oscillator (∿ △ ⩘ ⊓) select sine, triangle, sawtooth, or square.
- Red toggle switches (POWER, GLIDE, LEGATO, POLY, ARP, BPM SYNC) turn features on/off with a single click or tap.
OCTAVE, SCALE & KEY
- OCTAVE −/+ shifts the whole keyboard up or down (range −3 to +3). Keyboard shortcuts: [ down, ] up.
- SCALE and KEY menus are provided for reference/future scale-locking features.
PITCH & MOD WHEELS
Drag the left wheel for pitch bend (springs back to center on release). Drag the right wheel for mod amount, which sweeps the filter brighter as it increases.
COMPUTER KEYBOARD
- ZSXDCVGBHNJM — one octave of white/black keys, bottom row.
- Q through I row — a second octave up.
- [ / ] — octave down/up. ← / → — previous/next preset.
MIDI
- Tap the ⌁ connect icon in the top bar to request MIDI access from your browser.
- Once connected, any class-compliant MIDI keyboard or controller will play notes, respond to pitch bend, and respond to the mod wheel (CC1).
- To map a hardware knob to any on-screen knob, double-click the on-screen knob, then move the hardware control.
GAME CONTROLLER (GAMEPAD)
- Connect a controller (Bluetooth or USB) and press any button — the browser will detect it automatically.
- Face buttons (A/B/X/Y or ▢△✕○) play a scale of notes.
- D-pad up/down — octave up/down.
- Left bumper / Right bumper — previous/next preset.
- Left stick — pitch bend. Right stick (vertical) — filter/mod sweep.
STATUS LIGHTS
The row of dots at the bottom of the screen shows live connection state for Audio, MIDI, Gamepad, and computer Keyboard input — green means active.
Tip: on mobile, make sure your device isn't in silent/mute mode — the Web Audio engine respects the hardware mute switch on iOS.
