WHAT IS THIS PLACE?

The Trooth Archives is a paranormal investigation report, focused on collecting the things that happen around public computers. The machines in internet cafés have been touched by thousands of strangers. We believe they keep something back from every session.

Below are three documented phenomena. Each has been reported independently, across borders, by people who never met. Read them in whatever order you like. We only ask that you do not dismiss what you cannot explain. If you are a trooth seeker and want to donate and become an official Troother, with perks coming soon subscribe today.

The machine remembers them.

This file concerns what old public hardware keeps back from every session, and the tall glitching thing that comes out when it can hold no more. The documentation is still being recovered. Access to File 01 is not available from this terminal.

There is a hum you cannot quite hear.

This file concerns a low frequency said to be emitted by certain older monitors, and what it does to the people sitting in front of them. The documentation is still being recovered. Access to File 02 is not available from this terminal.

▓▓▓ FILE 03 :: THE SCRYING MIRROR TERMINAL ▓▓▓

Dear Troothers,

Some ground does not forget what was buried in it and some machines were never as dead as they looked. This file is about the one place I have found where both of those things are true at once, and it is not a story, it is a room you could walk into tonight.

I did not want this one to be troo.

But sometimes places are built upon things that demand more respect, and how can you respect a sacred place if you didn't know it was there to begin with?

The ground

There is an internet café. I will not tell you the city. It sits on a plot that was cleared and redeveloped decades ago, flattened and paved and built over the way half of everywhere has been built over, and for a long time nobody had any reason to think about what was underneath it.

When contractors went in to renovate, years later, the digger came up short against something in the soil, and the operator climbed down to see what had stopped it, and found bone. Not one piece and not some random animal remains, but a whole pile of it, human, packed into the ground where roots should have been. It was a burial site. An old one, unmarked, wiped off every map and out of every record long before the first foundation was ever poured over it, so completely that the men who built the place had no idea they were building on graves. The dead were there the whole time. Nobody knew why.

They did not report it, not properly. They photographed what they had to, filled it back in, and finished on schedule, because the paperwork was already signed and a delay would have needed explaining. Pressured by those above them, the builders poured the cement and went on with their lives.

So understand the café for what it is. It is a room full of humming machines, machines used for communicating, standing on the unmarked dead. And one of those machines does not work the way it should.

The terminal

Every café has that one computer nobody uses. The slow one, the broken one, the one in the corner with the wobbly chair. In this café that machine is by the back wall, and for years the daytime staff assumed it was simply dead. But the night staff said it was used often, and the manager, confused by the situation, made a call.

Then someone came to fix it.

The engineer who looked at it found something he could not explain and did not enjoy explaining. The terminal has never been plugged in. Not unplugged. Never plugged in. There is no cable running to it and there never has been, the socket behind it is sealed under dust that has not been disturbed since the wall was painted, and the machine has no power source of any kind that anyone has been able to find. By every rule we understand, that screen has never once been capable of turning on.

People use it anyway. This is the part I need you to sit with, trooth seekers. Night staff have watched customers cross the whole room to sit at the dead machine when every other terminal was free. They have looked up from the counter and seen someone at it, hunched close, face lit, and looked again and found the chair empty. The machine that cannot switch on is the machine people keep choosing.

The ones who sit there by accident

Most of them do not know what they are sitting at. They take the corner seat because it is the only one free, or because they like the quiet of it, and out of nothing but habit they reach for the power button. Everyone does it. You sit down at a computer, you press the button, you wait for the light. It is the most ordinary movement in the world.

The screen stays black. And in the black, they say, something answers.

What I want you to notice first is that these people were not looking for anything. They wanted twenty minutes of internet and a chair. They pressed a button that could not possibly do anything, and they got an answer to a question they never asked.

Reports of terrified users seeing future obituaries for themselves and their partners. Social media accounts showing family members missing or with new lovers on dates not yet past. Their own profile turned into a memorial page, the wall filling with goodbye messages from people they have not fallen out with yet. A photograph of a funeral they do not recognise, until they find their own face in the front row of it. A number somewhere on the screen, counting down, with no way of knowing counting down to what. A single word, repeated over and over across the whole screen, meaning nothing to them now. A future they were not ready for and should never have seen.

The ones who come looking

Here is the chilling part though trooth seekers.

Because the accidental ones are not the only visitors any more. Word of that terminal has travelled, quietly, through the kind of circles that already know what a black mirror is.

They started coming on purpose. Not to check their emails, not for a chair. They come for the terminal specifically, and they treat it with a seriousness the staff find far more disturbing than any of the accidental cases. They come at closing, when the room is emptying. They come in small groups and take turns. Some of them bring things with them and leave things behind, small offerings set on the desk that the morning staff throw away without touching. They sit in front of the black screen the way their predecessors sat in front of obsidian, and they do not press the power button, because they already understand that it was never a button. They just look into it. And they wait to be shown.

They are of the occult, the witches, the ones who pray to the underworld.

This is the difference I keep turning over. The accidental ones stumble into an answer and are destroyed by it. These people know exactly what it is, know precisely what it costs, and they want it anyway. They are not victims of the machine. They are its congregation.

Why I keep this file open

I do not have an explanation for you. I never do, not really. I do not know what unmarked ground does to a piece of hardware that was never alive to begin with, or why it settled into that one terminal and not the others, or why it shows some people nothing and shows others the exact shape of their own ending. I only have the pattern I always end up with in this archive, the one that runs under all three of these theories like a wire: the machine takes something in, and sooner or later, the machine gives it back.

One remembers your past. One controls your present. This one was here before either of them, waiting under the floor, and it has only ever been interested in your future.

So if you are ever in a café you do not know, and there is one machine by the wall that nobody is using, and you feel yourself starting to cross the room towards it, I am asking you, as someone who has read every account of this I could find and slept badly for all of them: do not sit down. Do not press the button that was never a button. Whatever it is willing to show you, you do not want to be shown it early. There is no version of learning that date sooner that helps you. Walk away please my Troothers.. Walk away!
